So…When do we Hike to Machu Picchu?
“When do we hike to Machu Picchu?, Are we Hiking up to Machu Picchu?” Those are probably some of the most common questions we get from our clients. The assumption being that they will hike up to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes along with their tour group.
In reality you can climb up to Machu Picchu if you desire however the vast majority and by vast I mean 99.9% will take the shuttle up to the Inca city. After explaining this we normally get a “so we hike in and around Machu Picchu, right?” Well the easy answer is….possibly; Machu Picchu is not really a hike but more of a walk around; however there are hikes within the complex which can easily be planned out. This way you can quench your desire to hike in the complex. The first one is of course an adjacent peak called Huayna Picchu. This additional hike can be a tad difficult to book, it is so popular the the 2 hour hike should and is booked a few months before arrival. Similar to the Inca Trail, Huayna Picchu has a set limit of visitors it is allowed to take in every day. Some of the post cards you see of Machu Picchu are usually taken from this peak; it is of moderate difficulty but well worth the the climb.
The other hike you can take within the Machu Picchu complex is “Mount Machu Picchu. This hike also takes about 2 hours to finish and has some amazing views of the Inca city which rivals Huayna Picchu. The hike is not as traversed as the first one so it is much easier to take this hike. Short of taking a trekking tour to The Inca citadel; Mount Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu are hikes well worth considering.
