Because the Peruvian government strictly limits the number of people on the trail to 500 per day (including guides and porters), permits sell out fast. For the 4-day Classic Trail, we recommend booking 6 to 8 months in advance, especially for the peak season (May–August). The 2-day Short Trail is more flexible but should still be booked 2 to 3 months ahead to guarantee your preferred dates.
The 4-day Classic Trail is a full immersion: you hike approximately 42km (26 miles), cross high mountain passes like “Dead Woman’s Pass,” and camp in tents for three nights. The 2-day Short Trail is a great “highlights” version; you hike for one full day (about 12km/7 miles) starting from Chachabamba, enter through the Sun Gate in the afternoon, stay in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, and tour the Machu Picchu ruins on the second day.
Almost! The Inca Trail is open 11 months of the year, but it is strictly closed every February. This closure allows the government to perform essential maintenance on the paths and let the ecosystem recover. However, Machu Picchu itself remains open in February, and you can still reach it via the train or alternative treks like the Salkantay or Lares paths
An amazing experience! I have no idea how the chefs made such amazing meals in the middle of the mountains! Waking up at 4:00 AM on the last day to see Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate made every single blister worth it. Best part of our Peru trip, thanks to the incredible organization

Our guide was a total pro and told us stories about Incan history that really brought the stones to life. From the private transport back to our hotel to the quality of the tents, the agency handled every detail so we could just focus on the hike. Highlight of our Peru trip.

Our guides really knew their stuff and checked in on everyone constantly to make sure the altitude wasn’t hitting us too hard. It’s a tough trek, but the way this travel agency looks after you makes you feel like a VIP even in the middle of the wilderness

The 2-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the express version of the traditional hiking route that will trek from the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes and finally to the Machu Picchu ruins.
